Rev. Walter J. Wehmeier passed away in his home on Tuesday, December 15, 2015 at the age of 88 years and 6 months. Walter was the second born of seven children to Rev. Walter and Flora (Brunkhorst) Wehmeier on May 29, 1927 at their home in Alta Vista, KS.
Visitation will be Sunday, December 20, 2015 at Brown-Dugger Funeral Home Chapel from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm with family greeting friends from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, December 21, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. in the Zion Lutheran Church with Rev. Frank Kinast officiating and assisted by Rev. Carlton Reimer. Burial will follow at Richburg Cemetery east of Perry. Services are under the direction of Brown-Dugger Funeral Home.
Walter grew up in Alta Vista and attended high school at St. John's Academy in Winfield KS, continued with college at St. John's and on to Concordia Seminary in St. Louis. He and Doris Grace McBeth were united in marriage in 1952 and to that union were blessed with six children. Rev. Wehmeier was ordained into the office of the Holy Ministry in 1953. His first parish was in Niagara Falls, New York. He also pastored churches in Newark, NJ, Jetmore, KS, Guymon, OK, Perry, Oklahoma and ended his 40 years in ministry in Lincolnville KS. Upon retirement they moved to Stillwater OK where he continued to fulfill ministry needs to congregations on a weekly basis. His love and dedication to spreading the love of the one whom he served was daily evident in his life. Walter planted three mission congregations during his ministry. Walter loved traveling through the United States and always had his camera ready for photos. He was known as a gentle, humble man who never met a stranger and lived out his faith with great joy. Spending time with his grandchildren was his great pleasure along with showing them how to play a perfect game of solitaire and dominos.
He is survived by daughters: Grace Wehmeier of Stillwater, Sara Belford of Girard, IL; son: Dan and Rachel Wehmeier Gardner, KS; three grandchildren: William Belford III, Laura Wehmeier, Rebecca Wehmeier; three brothers: Gilbert and Elvira Wehmeier, Robert Wehmeier, Melvin and Frances Wehmeier; two sisters: Lois and Fred Boerger and Norma and Wayne Fearey.
Walter was preceded in death by his wife Doris; three sons: Harry, John and Paul; one sister, Gertrude.
