Velma Urania Salter, 98, of Perry, Oklahoma, formerly of Billings, Newkirk and Tonkawa, Oklahoma was the daughter of William Stewart and Sarah Elizabeth French Hogan. She was born March 30, 1908 in Argonia, Kansas and died Tuesday, May 30, 2006 at Perry Memorial Hospital in Perry, Oklahoma. Velma graduated from Wakita High School in Wakita, Oklahoma in 1926. She and Harold G. McKeown Sr. were married on April 5, 1929 in Newkirk, Oklahoma. In 1935, she and her husband moved from Billings, Oklahoma to Newkirk, Oklahoma where he worked for the Oklahoma Tax Commission as Chief Inspector for the Port of Entry. Her husband died on March 30, 1943. Velma worked as a cashier in food stores in Billings, Oklahoma for 10 years. She and Barney J. Salter were married in Billings, Oklahoma on May 26, 1948. They moved to Tonkawa, Oklahoma in 1953. He died on February 20, 1969. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Tonkawa. She was a member of the Mary Martha Sunday School class and served as class treasurer for many years. Velma also was a former member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Her interests were working in her yard and crocheting. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 2, 2006 in the Dugger Funeral Home Chapel in Tonkawa, Oklahoma. Committal services will be at 3:45 p.m. Friday, June 2, 2006 in the Union Cemetery at Billings Oklahoma. Services are under the direction of Dugger Funeral Home of Tonkawa. Pall bearers will be grandchildren, Connie Benell, Christopher McKeown, Terry McKeown, Pamela McKeown, Kerry McKeown, Kevin McKeown, Curtis Benell, Beth McKeown, Erin McKeown and Gary L. Hays. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Tonkawa in care of Dugger Funeral Home, 400 E. Grand Ave., Tonkawa, OK 74653. Survivors are three sons, Harold G. McKeown and his wife, Ann, of Tulare, California, Jerry H. McKeown and his wife, Sally, of Billings, Oklahoma and Daryl L. McKeown and his wife, Claudia, of Norman, Oklahoma; one daughter, Kathleen McKeown Pickens, of Enid, Oklahoma; one step-daughter, Juanita Hapeman, of Dallas, Texas; nine grandchildren, Christopher McKeown and Pamela McKeown, both of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Terry McKeown and his wife, Cindy, of Ardmore, Oklahoma, Erin McKeown, of Sacramento, California, Beth McKeown and her husband, Igor Teper, of Cambridge, Massachusetts, Kerry McKeown, of Norman, Oklahoma, Dr. Kevin McKeown and his wife, Jennifer, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Connie Benell and her husband, Rex, of Enid, Oklahoma, and Gary L. Hays and his wife, Sami, of Honolulu, Hawaii; five great-grandchildren, Curtis Benell and Alyssa Benell, of Enid, Oklahoma, Sarah Bennet and Emily Bennet, of Ardmore, Oklahoma and John Hays, of Guam; one great-great-grandchild, Shelby Benell, of Enid, Oklahoma; five step-grandchildren, five step-great-grandchildren and 11 nieces and nephews.
