Susan Carothers, 95, passed from this life May 11, 2016 at Stillwater Medical Center. She was surrounded by her family as she went to be with her Lord and Savior. Susan was born in Hazel Green, Kentucky, September 19, 1920 to M.C. and Grace (Vest) Nickell.
She graduated from Hazel Green Academy, an Appalachian boarding school run by the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and later by the United Christian Missionary Society.
From HGA, Susan went to Berea College in Kentucky. She graduated in 1943 with a BS in Home Economics and Science.
After graduation from Berea, Susan went to Mann, West Virginia to teach Home Economics and Science at the high school. In June 1944 Susan married Ed Carothers. They moved to Alpine, TN where Ed worked as a forester for the Presbyterian church-run school, Alpine Institute, and Susan taught school at nearby Livingston, TN. Susan then took a break from her teaching career as she and Ed had two children, Jim and Barbara.
In the mid 1950's they moved to Monticello, Arkansas. There Ed taught Forestry at Arkansas A & M College (now the University of Arkansas at Monticello); Susan worked in the A & M College library. In the mid 1960's they moved to Ruston, Louisiana where Ed taught Forestry at Louisiana Tech University until his retirement in 1988. Susan and Ed were married 66 years before his passing in 2010. For all her life, Susan has been very active in her church. No matter where she lived or what church she attended she modeled the life of a "servant disciple."
Susan is survived by her son, Jim Carothers and wife, Sherill ( Perry, OK)and her daughter, Barbara Carothers ( Indianapolis, IN); grandson Matt Carothers and wife Tracey ( Atlanta, GA); grandchildren Katie Ulmer( Indianapolis) and Andrew Ulmer (Bloomington, Indiana), and many special nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ed, and two brothers, Bill and Fred Nickell.
A service of celebration of Susan's life will be held in Ruston, LA with interment to follow in Hazel Green, KY. Memorial contributions may be made in Susan's name to the church of your choice.
