Sarah Mae Hurst Gates, 80, beloved daughter, wife, mother and grandmother, was born in Orlando, Oklahoma on January 11, 1928 to John C. and Verna L. Peterson Hurst. She died Friday, December 5, 2008 at the MeadowBrook Specialty Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Sarah married Charles T. Gates on February 2, 1946 in Winfield, Kansas. To this marriage two daughters were born Karen and Connie. Sarah worked for the Oklahoma Highway Department from 1969 until she retired in 1985. She moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1987. After moving to Tulsa, Sarah worked as a Volunteer for the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. She continued her hobby of quilting and spent time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at the Brown-Dugger Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Ed Cook will officiate. Services are under the direction of Brown-Dugger Funeral Home in Perry. Memorials may be made to the donor's favorite charity in care of Brown-Dugger Funeral Home, 1010 N. 7th Street, Perry, Oklahoma 73077. Sarah is survived by two daughters, Karen L. Gates and her husband, Dale L. House, of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Connie L. Gates and her husband, Roger C. Johnson, of Kintyre, North Dakota; four grandchildren, Penny House Parker and her husband, Wayne of New Athens, Illinois, Dale L. House, Jr. and his wife, Christy, of Collinsville, Oklahoma, Aaron W. Johnson and his wife, Crystal, of Kintyre, North Dakota and Owen C. Johnson and his wife, Tianne, of Bismarck, North Dakota; 12 great-grandchildren, Zachary and Kyla Miller, of New Athens, Illinois, Sara, Megan, Isaac and Caitlyn House, of Collinsville, Oklahoma, Breanna and Ethan Johnson, of Kintyre, North Dakota and Sadie and Sawyer Johnson, Elizabeth Buller and Jared Selzler, of Bismarck, North Dakota; three sisters, Patsy Ann Irwin and her husband, Wayne, of Manteca, California, Paulette Wilson of Cookson, Oklahoma and Dorothy Miller of Bentonville, Arkansas; one sister-in-law, Emily Hurst of Stockton, California and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, John C. and Verna Hurst, husband, Charles T. Gates, two sisters, Ada Bell Barnard and Lois Elaine Hurst and two brothers, Walter L. Hurst and John D. Hurst.
