Rena Bruning

February 14, 1933 — January 16, 2008

Rena Jo Hurst Bruning was born in Enid, Oklahoma on February 14, 1933 to Floyd and Rena Barnes Hurst. She passed away on January 16, 2008 at the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg, Kansas at the age of 74. The Hurst family lived in Garber, Oklahoma and moved to Phillipsburg, Kansas in 1938, where Rena attended the Phillipsburg schools. Rena Jo married Charles Bruning and they made their home in Cambridge, Nebraska. While there, they enjoyed raising and racing horses. After Charles passed away, Rena Jo returned to Phillipsburg and worked at the Phillips County Retirement Center for approximately 17 years. She was also employed at the Cottonwood Inn and Long Term Care as a housekeeper and laundry aide. Rena also worked for Ken Lipprand Janitorial Service until his business moved to Hays. She then did janitorial work for several local businesses. Rena Jo enjoyed going to craft fairs, collecting dolls, cat memorabilia, as well as jewelry. She also owned and cared for many pets throughout her lifetime. Rena Jo liked meeting new people and she never knew a stranger. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. Graveside services will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 19, 2008 in the Garber Cemetery at Garber, Oklahoma. Pastor Steve Littrell will officiate. Services are under the direction of Dugger Funeral Home of Garber. Her parents, Floyd and Rena, and husband, Charles, preceded her in death. Survivors include her sister, Phyllis Keim, of Glade, Kansas; and her nieces, Michelle Fortt and husband, Ben, and their children of Aurora, Colorado, and Melinda Younkin and husband, Wade, and their children of Norton, Kansas.
