Lee Thorp

August 2, 1932 — December 4, 2011

Lee LaVaun Thorp joined his Lord and Savior on Sunday, December 4th, 2011in Enid, Oklahoma after a brief illness. He was born near Garber, Oklahoma on August 2nd, 1932, to LaVaun Elgin Thorp and Amy Jo Bryant Thorp. He attended Oklahoma AM University now Oklahoma State University and graduated in the spring of 1954. While there he met and married his first wife LaNita Brown. They were married on December 19th, 1953. After graduation he took a commission in the United States Army. During his service he commanded units in the 82nd Airborne Division and the 1st Infantry Division. In addition to the continental United States, he served in Alaska, Germany, Thailand and Viet Nam. After twentynine years of dedicating his life to the service of his country he retired in 1983 with the rank of Colonel. While his children were growing up he worked closely with the Boy Scouts of America. He enjoyed teaching his sons how to hunt, fish and camp. In his spare time he also enjoyed gardening and carpentry. After retirement he resettled to the family home in Garber. He moved to Enid in 2004. A celebration of his life will be held Friday, December 9, 2011 Immanuel Lutheran Church, Garber, at 11:00 a.m., Rev. Scott Ray will officiate. Interment will follow in the Garber Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Dugger Funeral Home, Garber, Oklahoma. Memorials may be made to the Immanuel Lutheran Church in care of Dugger Funeral Home, P.O. Box 66, Garber, Oklahoma 73738. He was preceded in death by his parents, LaVaun and Amy Thorp, his brother, Larry Thorp and his first wife, LaNita Thorp. He is survived by his sons, Mike, Russell and Stephen, five grandchildren, and his second wife, Joan Crews Thorp.
