Joe G. Stewart, 74, of Wichita, Kansas, former resident of Perry and Ponca City, Oklahoma, was the son of Guy Pete and Ruby Maude Gorton Stewart. He was born on October 24, 1931 in Red Rock, Oklahoma and died Sunday, March 5, 2006 in the VA Transitional Living Center in Wichita, Kansas. He attended Perry schools. Joe served his country as a member of the United States Army from November 1952 to February 1954 serving in the Korean War. He was a member of the American Legion. Joe and Thelma L. Hoogendoorn were married on November 25, 1954 in Ponca City, Oklahoma. He worked for MW Grocery and Meadow Gold Dairy in Ponca City and Atlas Tank in Tonkawa, Oklahoma. He also was a truck driver for several years. He enjoyed camping, fishing and spending time with his family. Graveside services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 8, 2006 at the Grace Hill Memorial Pavilion in Grace Hill Cemetery. Pastor Roy Fleshman will officiate, assisted by Dr. Sheila Combs-Francis, pastor of Albright United Methodist Church in Ponca City. Services are under the direction of Brown-Dugger Funeral Home in Perry, Oklahoma. There will be a family visitation from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 7, 2006 at the Brown-Dugger Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Ponca City Humane Society in care of Brown-Dugger Funeral Home, 1010 N. 7th Street, Perry, OK 73077. Joe is survived by two sons, Marshall Joseph Stewart and his wife, Julie, and Kenneth Guy Stewart and his wife, Marsha, all of Ponca City, Oklahoma; two daughters, Trudy Murphy and her husband, Butch, of Corpus Christi, Texas and Tonya Lucille Steele and her husband, Larry Jr., and their mother, Thelma, all of Ponca City, Oklahoma; 18 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, one brother, Ben G. Stewart and his wife, Inola, of Wichita, Kansas; and several nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters.
