Jeanne Faris

November 14, 1922 — September 10, 2008

Jeanne M. Faris, 85, of Horizon City, Texas, formerly of Perry, Oklahoma, was the daughter of Fred A. and Hazel M. Noonan Combrink. She was born November 14, 1922 at Billings, Oklahoma and died Wednesday, September 10, 2008 at the Regent Care Center in El Paso, Texas. Jeanne was the daughter of a pioneer Noble County family. Her grandfather Noonan made the Cherokee Strip Land Run on September 16, 1893. He brought the rest of the family, including Jeanne's mother, Hazel May, to Noble County in 1894 by covered wagon. On February 24, 1945, she and William G. Faris were married at Cherokee, Oklahoma. Jeanne worked in many offices at the Noble County Court House and at Lloyd Jones Well Service, Perry Memorial Hospital, Morrow Service Company and Days Inn. She also sold Avon for many years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Order of the Eastern Star and the Progress Club and was active in the Democratic Party. Jeanne enjoyed sewing and crocheting vests for family and special friends. Long before she moved to El Paso, Texas 10 years ago, Jeanne went to Texas to visit several times each year. She always spent much time with the children at Escontrias Elementary School. The school office and nurse were especially happy when she could be there to help them keep track of the money when they had fundraisers. Since she had no grandchildren of her own, Jeanne adopted the whole school and became known simply as Granny by all. Escontrias is a large school of about 750 children, so, over the past 21 years, who could count how many grandchildren she must have Jeanne loved to teach the students how to do handcrafts and it was not uncommon for her to show up with a big armful of pizza and juice. She also loved to receive letter and notes from students and, as long as she could, she answered each one. She and her daughter both believed that the love and fervent prayers of these little children helped her live long past the time the doctors predicted. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 16, 2008 at the First United Methodist Church in Perry. Rev. Ed Cook will officiate. Interment will be in Grace Hill Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Brown-Dugger Funeral Home of Perry. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Monday, September 15, 2008 at Brown-Dugger Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church or the Soup Kitchen in care of Brown-Dugger Funeral Home, 1010 N. 7th Street, Perry, Oklahoma 73077. Jeanne is survived by one daughter, Billie Jean Keirns, of Horizon City, Texas; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Wilbur Ernestine Combrink, of Caddo, Oklahoma; two nieces, Mrs. Howard Carolyn Combrink Thomas, of Ft. Towson, Oklahoma and Mrs. John Mary Luella Merrell Schmook, of Bella Vista, Arkansas; four nephews, Dr. Roy Combrink, of Fort Worth, Texas, Jerry Combrink, of Durant, Oklahoma, Fred Combrink, of Marlow, Oklahoma and Gary Lee Combrink, of Wells, Nevada; and several great-nephews and great-nieces.
