Henry J. Toews, 93, of Perry, Oklahoma was the son of John A. and Anna Kroeker Toews. He was born July 7, 1915 at Enid, Oklahoma and died Thursday, July 31, 2008 at Perry Memorial Hospital. Henry served his country in the United States Army from August 1, 1942 until November 12, 1945. He was a surgical technician with the 91st Medical Battery, Company C, attached to the First Army. Henry was in the first landing party in the D-Day landing at Normandy and participated in all of the major battles of World War II. He achieved the rank of T5 and was awarded six Bronze Stars, one Silver Star and a Purple Heart before his discharge from military service. He was engaged in farming in Garfield and Noble counties and previously lived in the Garber and Enid communities. Henry and Oletha P. Mills were married on June 24, 1950 at Cherokee, Oklahoma and they made their home in Perry. For 26 years, Henry was employed by Henry Dolezal. He later worked for Bill Gengler. Henry enjoyed gardening, fishing and visiting with friends at Daylight Donuts and Mr. C. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 4, 2008 at the First Christian Church in Perry. Rev. Martin Foster will officiate. Committal services will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 4, 2008 at the Mennonite Cemetery at Enid, Oklahoma. Services are under the direction of Brown-Dugger Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Henry J. Toews Fund for final expenses in care of Brown-Dugger Funeral Home, 1010 N. 7th Street, Perry, Oklahoma 73077. Henry is survived by one daughter, Vera Bea Ives of Wichita, Kansas; one daughter-in-law, Marilyn Mills Inselman of Perry, Oklahoma; four grandchildren, James A. Ives of Loveland, Colorado and Angel Moore, Warren Mills and Terry Mills, all of Perry, Oklahoma; 11 great-grandchildren, two sisters, Helena Hiebert of Frederick, Oklahoma and Sarah Dyck of Edmond, Oklahoma; and one sister-in-law, Betty Toews of Carrollton, Texas. In addition to his wife, Oletha, Henry was preceded in death by one son, Walter S. Mills; one great-granddaughter, Sierra Mills; four brothers, Abe Toews, Ruben Toews, Johnny Toews and Isaac Toews; and one sister, Esther Gertzen.
