Gayland Laverne Sandy, 85, of Perry went to be with his Heavenly Father on August 25, 2022. He was born on May 25, 1937, in Oklahoma City to Laverne Sandy and Mabel Louise (Crouch) Sandy. Raised in Oklahoma City, he graduated from Classen High School in 1955. After graduation, he attended Oklahoma State University for 3 ½ years where he studied Meteorology. He went on to finish his undergraduate degree at Central State University in Edmond graduating with a bachelor’s degree in 1969. He worked for the federal government as a land management/flood control specialist for over 30 years. During this time, he served in the Army Reserves for 5 years
He met the love of his life, Jackie in December of 1977. They were married in Oklahoma City. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, always grew a large garden and was a hobby farmer and rancher. He was very involved with the First Christian Church of Perry. The church hosted many fish fries to raise the money to build the fellowship hall and Gayland was an integral part. Gayland had 2 best friends, Don Klinglesmith and Gordon Cargill. They called themselves the Three Amigos. They could often be seen at Sooner Lake trolling for fish.
Gayland leaves behind to celebrate his life daughter Marsha Metcalf and her husband Joey of Mannford, son Brett Sandy and his wife Valerie of Perry, daughter Kym Payne and her husband Mark of Stillwater, step daughter Cindy Williams and her husband Jay of Perry, step daughter Tina Hardy of Stillwater, grandchildren: Jake Myers, Derek Myers, Wes Myers, Braxton Sandy, Bobbie Murrow, Brandie Carter, Heather Frable, Alicia Malget, Mike Knott, Cody Payne, Lacey Payne, Justin Williams, Jason Williams, and Erin Hardy. Twenty-two great grandchildren with 1 on the way, as well as 5 great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by sister-in-law Elaine Sandy and his best friend, Gordon Cargill.
He was preceded in death by his parents Laverne and Mable, wife Jackie, grandson Jared Williams, brother Richard Sandy, sister Mary Lantz, and one of his buddies, Don Klinglesmith.
Friends are welcome to stop by Brown Dugger Funeral Home of Perry on Tuesday (8/30) and Wednesday (8/31) from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. to sign his book and pay their respects. Family will be present to receive guests at a reception from 5p.m. until 8 p.m. the night before the service (Wed 8/31) at the funeral home. Refreshments will be served.
Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. on Thursday September 1, 2022, at the First Christian Church of Perry. Minister Joshua Bell will officiate. Casket bearers will include Jake Myers, Derek Myers, Wes Myers, Braxton Sandy, Justin Williams, and Chase Myers. Burial will follow at Grace Hill Cemetery pavilion of Perry.
