Dennis Avery

Dennis A. Avery, 66, of Perry, Oklahoma was the son of Glenn and Edith I. Christman Avery. He was born March 24, 1942 in Covington, Oklahoma and died Wednesday, December 31, 2008 at Perry Memorial Hospital. Dennis was a 1960 graduate of Covington High School. On December 3, 1961, he and Judith Judy A. Stebbins were married at Covington, Oklahoma. Dennis and Judy made their first home in Enid, Oklahoma. Dennis worked seven years for the State Highway Department. He then went to work for Speed Star and they moved to Moab, Utah. They later returned to Oklahoma and made their home at Perry. In 1972, Dennis became employed at Charles Machine Works, first as a welder and later as an Outsource Supervisor and Heat Treat Supervisor. He retired from Charles Machine Works in June, 2002. Dennis then devoted his time to his farm and cattle and the Rock Township Rural Fire Department. He was instrumental in organizing the Rock Township Rural Fire Department and served as chairman of the board. He spent many hours helping build and maintain the fire trucks and assisting the firemen at rural fires. He was a member of the Covington Christian Church and was a charter member of the Perry Elks Lodge, which he helped organize. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 5, 2009 at the First Baptist Church in Perry. Brother Aaron Summers will officiate. Interment will be in the McGuire Cemetery at Lucien, Oklahoma. Services are under the direction of Brown-Dugger Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Sunday, January 4, 2009 at Brown-Dugger Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Rock Township Fire Department in care of Brown-Dugger Funeral Home, 1010 N. 7th Street, Perry, Oklahoma 73077. Dennis is survived by two sons, Merle Alan Avery, of Frisco, Texas and Glen Austin Avery, of Anna, Texas; one grandson, Jacob Alan Avery, of Frisco, Texas; two brothers, Eldon Avery and his wife, Sharon, of Perry, Oklahoma and Loren Avery and his wife, Mary, of Enid, Oklahoma; three sisters, Linda Shimanek and her husband, Bernie, of Covington, Oklahoma, Diana Scott and her husband, Gary, of Grand Junction, Colorado; and Anetta Bartlet, of Lantana, Texas; 11 nieces and nephews; 12 great-nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, Judy, who died February 11, 2007, Dennis was preceded in death by his parents.
